ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John’s skated closer to a MIAC Playoff berth with a 4-2 win over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday evening in St. Cloud.
Senior forward Jordan Swan (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 12:37 mark of the first period. Junior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) increased the Johnnies’ lead with a power-play goal five minutes later with assists going to senior forward Pat Eagles (Falcon Heights, Minn.) and freshman forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.).
Concordia cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal from Matt Cosmos with 1:25 remaining in the opening frame.
Junior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) regained the two-goal lead for SJU 2:12 into the second period. Junior defenseman Clayton Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn.) and freshman defenseman Jared Smith (Grand Rapids, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play. Senior forward Tom Freeman (Eagan, Minn.) added to the lead with his ninth goal of the season nine seconds into the third period. Eagles and senior defenseman Nate Meinz (St. Cloud, Minn.) recorded assists on the tally.
The Cobbers’ Ryan Clukey ended the scoring for both teams with a goal with 7:03 left in regulation.
Junior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 18 saves for SJU, while Josh Hand made 32 stops for Concordia (1-20-1, 0-12-1 MIAC).
Saint John’s (11-9-2, 7-4-2 MIAC) hosts Concordia tomorrow for a 2 p.m. opening faceoff at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
