Jerry Haugen
Defensive Coordinator
Haugen ended his 32nd season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2007. The team’s defensive coordinator, Haugen was named 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly. The Johnnies posted a 276-62-5 (.812) overall record and a 221-39-4 (.845) MIAC record in the 31 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU allowed 13.7 points per game (343 games) and recorded 48 shutouts (14%) during his tenure. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15. Haugen also serves as the University’s head baseball coach. Haugen currently has a career record of 568-482-5, which places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Div. III winningest active coaches win list. In addition, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach during his tenure at SJU. Jim Gagliardi
Offensive Coordinator
The 2007 season was Jim Gagliardi’s 16th year as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator. The Johnnies posted a 157-26-2 (.854) overall record and a 116-12-2 (.900) MIAC record in the 15 seasons with Gagliardi as part of the offensive coaching staff. SJU averaged 418.9 yards of total offense (185 games) during his tenure. Gagliardi played four years from 1985 to 1988 at Saint John’s as a wide receiver and was part of a conference championship and two national playoff squads. He has a master’s degree in business administration from St. Cloud State University. Gagliardi and his wife, Anne, have four children and live in St. Cloud. - jimmyone@csbsju.edu
Gary Fasching
Defensive Coach
Fasching ended his 12th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in '07. A 1981 graduate of Saint John’s, Fasching is the facility coordinator for the University’s McGlynn Fitness Center and an assistant coach for the track & field team. He was a three-year starter for the Johnnies from 1977-80. Fasching was the head football coach at St. Cloud Cathedral High School from 1986 to 1995. During that time, Fasching lead the Crusaders to the state class B title in 1992 and 1993. Fasching and his wife, Cindy, have five children and reside in St. Joseph. - gfasching@csbsju.edu
Brandon Novak
Defensive Coach
2007 was Brandon Novak’s eighth season as an assistant coach for the Johnnies. A 2001 graduate of SJU, Novak won the national wrestling title at 197-pounds in March 2001 and was a three-time All-American. On the football field, Novak was named MIAC MVP as a linebacker in 1999 and a two-time first-team All-America selection. Novak is also in his second year as head wrestling coach at SJU. Dean Taylor
Offensive Coach
Taylor ended his seventh season as an assistant coach for the SJU football team in 2007. Taylor is the former head football coach at Sartell High School, where he made five state tournament appearances and won the state class A title in 1994. Taylor was inducted into the Minnesota State Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November 2003. Taylor and his wife, Kathy, live in St. Joseph, have two adult children and six grandchildren.
Jim Mader
Offensive Coach
2007 was Mader’s fourth season as an assistant coach for the SJU football team. Mader is the former head football coach and activities director at Albany High School, where he made 15 football state tournament appearances and won state titles in 1989 and 1997. Mader retired in 2002 after 23 seasons at Albany and was inducted into the Minnesota State Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November 2002. Mader is also a 2006 inductee into both the Minnesota Athletic Directors' Hall of Fame and Albany Hall of Fame. Mader and his wife, Carol, live in Albany, and have two children and one grandson.
Damien Dumonceaux
Defensive Coach
Dumonceaux ended his second season on the defensive coaching staff in 2007 after being a three-year starter at nose tackle from 2003-05. A 2005 All-American, Dumonceaux was named the Football Gazette's Defensive Lineman of the Year, D3football.com's Defensive Player of the Year and received the MIAC Mike Stam Award as the conference's top lineman.
Josh Kuenzel
Offensive Coach
Kuenzel ended his first season as an assistant offensive coach in 2007. A 2007 graduate of SJU, Kuenzel was an assistant coach at Paynesville High School for the past two seasons. From 2004-07, Kuenzel served as the SJU student video coordinator. - jkuenzel@csbsju.edu
