Collegeville, Minn. – Saint John’s University junior Beau LaBore returned two interceptions for touchdowns as the Johnnies defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 23-10, in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Division III Football Championship. The game was played at Clemens Stadium on the SJU campus in front of over 5,100 fans.
LaBore returned freshman Dave Berghuis’s pass 66 yards with 0:46 seconds left in the first half to give the Johnnies as 13-3 lead at halftime. LaBore’s second pick off sealed the victory as he returned senior Ryan Aulenbacher’s pass for a school record 92-yard interception return. The 158 yards on interception returns by Beau LaBore set a new NCAA Div. III playoff game record.
SJU jumped on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by junior Chris Moore. Senior Jason Steuck kicked a 27-yard field goal for UW-Stevens Point with 5:05 left in the first half to cut SJU’s lead to 6-3. SJU junior Joe Rotondi kicked a 30-yard field goal with 6:24 left in the third quarter to increase the lead to 16-3. The Pointers finally entered the end zone with 0:25 seconds left in the game on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Aulenbacher to senior Larry Aschebrook.
The Pointers out gained the Johnnies, 306-207, in total offense and owned over a five-minute advantage in time of possession. Chris Moore rushed the ball 17 times for 88 yards and one touchdown for SJU. SJU senior quarterback Corey Stanger was 8-for-12 passing for 79 yards. Sophomore Lance Gast and junior Wally Schmidt rushed for 59 and 52 yards, respectively, for the Pointers. Dave Berghuis and Ryan Aulenbacher shared time at quarterback for UW-Stevens Point, collectively going 14-for-31 for 201 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
SJU improves to 10-1 overall, while UW-Stevens Point ends the season at 9-2. SJU will advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship and host Central, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon CST at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. SJU is currently 1-1 against Central in NCAA playoff games, with their last meeting coming back in 1989. SJU, which is making its 11th NCAA playoff appearance, has now won eight consecutive first round games. The Johnnies have a 15-9 all-time record in NCAA playoff games.
