Collegeville, Minn. -- The Saint John's University football team clinched at least a tie for the MIAC title with a 41-6 win over Carleton on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Northfield. SJU had five rushing touchdowns in the game.

SJU, currently ranked 15th in the nation, jumped on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Andy Landkammer, Springfield, scored from five yards out. The score remained 7-0 until late in the second quarter when Corey Stanger, Becker, scored on a one-yard touchdown run. After an interception by Beau LaBore, South St. Paul, Corey Stanger scored on an eight-yard run and the Johnnies led 21-0 at intermission.

The second half began for SJU as Aaron Krych, Holdingford, ran 71 yards for a touchdown. Late in the quarter, Jeff Radel, Redwood Falls, scored from two yards out and the Johnnies opened up a 35-0 lead. The fourth quarter saw Joe Rotondi, Woodbury, kick field goals of 27 and 40 yards. Carleton got on the scoreboard with a touchdown with six seconds left in the game.

SJU rushed for 252 yards in the game, including 90 yards from Andy Landkammer on 20 carries and 87 yards from Aaron Krych. Corey Stanger was 8-for-17 passing for 135 yards. Steve Lynch, Hugo, led the receiving group with four catches and 57 yards.

SJU out gained Carleton, 461 to 270 yards, in total offense. SJU benefited from four Carleton interceptions. Beau LaBore had two interceptions and six tackles in the win. Will Gibson, Winona, also had six tackles for the Johnnies. Phil Barry, Crete, Neb., currently the leading punter in the nation, averaged 43 yards on four punts.

SJU is now 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC. There are four teams tied for second place in the MIAC standings, one game behind the Johnnies. SJU will play against Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, Nov. 12, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Metrodome. The Johnnies can win the MIAC title outright and the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs with a victory over the Gusties. The Johnnies now have won or tied six MIAC titles in the last seven years.
