at Saint John's 42, Macalester 7

Collegeville, Minn. -- The Saint John's University football team relied on an outstanding overall rushing attack and a record-setting performance from Chris Moore as the Johnnies defeated Macalester, 42-7, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. SJU junior Chris Moore, Edina, broke a 23-year old school record as he rushed for 278 yards on 27 carries and two TDs. The previous school record was 266 yards rushing in a single game by Tim Schmitz in 1976 against Macalester. Moore was named MIAC special teams player of the week last week for his 288 all-purpose yards against Wis.-Eau Claire. Moore had 303 all-purpose yards against Macalester.

The Johnnies got on the scoreboard first as Macalester senior punter Ty O'Connell, Helana, Mont., picked up a wild snap and punted it through his own end zone for a safety. The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Johnnies until Chris Moore scored on a six-yard run early in the second quarter. Almost three minutes later, senior quarterback Tom Linnemann, Melrose, hit junior Nathan Kirschner, Mora, on a 23-yard pass and the Johnnies took a 15-0 lead into intermission.

The third quarter was all SJU as they outscored the Scots, 20-0. Chris Moore scored his second TD on a nine-yard run and then senior Ben Sieben, Melrose, scored on an eight-yard TD pass from Tom Linnemann. With the second team in the game, senior Joe Ashfield, St. Paul, hit sophomore John Treptau, Becker, on a one-yard TD pass.

Macalester finally put some points on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter as sophomore Grant Heuett, Pueblo, Colo., scored on a 65-yard run. The Johnnies put the final points on the board as sophomore Adam Laliberte, Westlake, Calif., scored on a one-yard run and a 42-7 win.

Besides the 278 yards rushing by Chris Moore, the Johnnies racked up 602 yards total offense, including 469 yards rushing. Macalester compiled 211 yards total offense in the game.

SJU is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC. Macalester is 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC. Macalester has not defeated SJU since 1968. The Johnnies will travel to St. Thomas next Saturday, Sept. 25, for a 1 p.m. CDT kickoff. The SJU/UST game is one of the best rivalries in all of Division III college football each year. Next Saturday's game will be the 68th meeting between the two institutions, dating back to 1901. Macalester will host Gustavus Adolphus next Saturday, Sept. 25, in St. Paul. SJU head coach John Gagliardi, in his 51st season as a collegiate head coach, now has 355 career wins and is 53 wins away from the all-time record.
