Gustavus Shoots Past the Johnnies, 77-70

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. –Gustavus Adolphus shot 68.2 percent from the floor in the first half (58.3 percent in the game) to build a 40-28 lead at the half on way to a 77-70 win over Saint John’s Wednesday night, Dec. 5 in Collegeville. The last time the Johnnies lost two regular season MIAC home games in a row was during the 2004-05 season (71-62 to Hamline on Jan. 15 and 65-58 to Gustavus on Jan. 19, 2005), a span of 26 games. 

Senior Brady Brink (Waconia, Minn.) led SJU with 24 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) was close behind with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, while freshman Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) added 11 points and nine rebounds.  SJU had a slow start to the game and finished the first half with just 28 points and shot 38.5 percent from the field.  The Johnnies picked it up in the second half and scored 42 points and finished the game with a 46.7 shooting percentage. The Johnnies’ bench has now been outscored 91-5 in their last four games.

Senior Trevor Wittwer led GAC with 17 points, while sophomore Jesse Van Sickle went 5-for-7 behind the arc and finished the game with 15 points. Sophomore Sam Paulson shot 5 of 6 from the field for 15 points and claimed six boards.

Saint John’s (3-2, 2-2 MIAC) will travel to face St. Cloud State Saturday Dec. 8.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.
