COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University opened its 2007-08 basketball season with a 86-70 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris Saturday, Nov. 17 at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
Senior wing Brady Brink (Waconia, Minn.) led the Johnnies with 22 points and 13 rebounds and five assists as he shot a blazing 81.8% (9 of 11) from the floor. Senior wing Ryan Lieser (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) followed with 21 points, while freshman wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) tallied 18 points in his SJU debut. Freshman Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) grabbed 12 rebounds and senior point guard Nick Johnson added eight assists.
Junior forward Phil Allen led Minn.-Morris (1-1, 0-0 UMAC) with 19 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Eric Dalbey and sophomore guard Hudson Brothen added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
SJU is now 34-10 all-time in home openers under the direction of head coach Jim Smith, including 17 of the last 21.
The Johnnies (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when they play host to Concordia-Moorhead. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
