Johnnies Cruise to 87-66 Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. –Saint John’s made its first nine shots and 12 of the first 15 as the Johnnies defeated St. Olaf 87-64 on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Sexton Arena. SJU shot 60.7% in the game (61.1% from three-point range), including a blistering 65.6% in the first half as the Johnnies jumped out to a 48-26 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.

Senior Brady Brink (Waconia, Minn.) led the Johnnies (12-9, 9-7 MIAC) with 27 points, 17 in the first half, in addition to nine rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) added 19 points and six assists, while senior Ryan Lieser (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) added 12 points and five assists. For the fourth time this season, freshman Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) recorded at least five points, five rebounds and five assists. Burtzel tallied six points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, including seven rebounds in the first half alone.

Senior Bobby Hunter led the Oles (9-12, 7-9 MIAC) with 14 points, while freshman Nate Krosschell added 10.

Saint John’s will travel to face Augsburg this Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.

Notes: SJU is now 36-4 all-time at home against St. Olaf under the direction of head coach Jim Smith (since 1964)…senior Ryan Lieser is now 24 points away from becoming the 31st player in Saint John’s history to reach 1,000 career points.
