Saint John's 84, Gustavus Adolphus 75
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Five Saint Johns University players scored in double figures as they defeated conference rival Gustavus Adolphus 84-75 in the second round of the NCAA Division III mens basketball tournament in front of a capacity 2,550 fans at Sexton Arena on the SJU campus. After falling behind early in the game, SJU had a 38-32 lead going into intermission. The Gusties did take the lead midway through the second half for a couple minutes, but the Johnnies countered with a run and they trailed after that.
SJU was led by senior Troy Bigalke, who had 21 points and four rebounds. Junior Mike Nester had 18 points and seven rebounds, while three players senior Ryan Dusha, sophomore Shawn McGuire and junior Ryan Keating each had 11 points in the win. Keating also added 10 assists and six rebounds from the point guard position.
The Johnnies, who currently lead the nation in field goal shooting percentage at 52.4-percent, shot 58.8-percent (30-of-51) from the field. SJU only connected on 4-of-17 three-point shots and were 20-of-30 from the charity line. SJU committed 13 turnovers, including only four in the second half.
Gustavus was led by senior Bobby Johnson with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Junior Chad Henke contributed 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out late in the game. First-year Eric Nelson had 11 points, while sophomore Hans Sviggum had 10 points.
The Gusties, who were 14th nationally this week in field goal shooting percentage at 49.1-percent, shot 39.3-percent (24-of-61) in the game. Gustavus was 8-of-23 from the three-point line and connected on 19-of-26 free throw attempts. The Gusties handled the ball well by only committing 11 turnovers.
SJU improves to 22-5 overall on the season and have now won 16 straight games. Gustavus ends the season with a 22-6 overall record. This was the fourth time this season that SJU and Gustavus have played and the Johnnies have now won the last three meetings. SJU defeated Gustavus last Saturday night in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff title game, 92-80, in Collegeville. With the win, SJU moves on to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III mens basketball tournament next weekend.
SJU head coach Jim Smith set a new Minnesota collegiate all-divisions record with his 589th career win. In his 37th season at SJU, Smith past former Hamline coach Joe Hutton to become Minnesotas winningest collegiate basketball coach in history. Smith currently has a 589-386 career record.
