Johnnies Top Cobbers in MIAC Semifinals
COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. - The Saint John’s University basketball team shook off a cold shooting first half to defeat Concordia-Moorhead College, 69-52, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal game at Sexton Arena.
The Johnnies, the number one seed in the tournament, led 17-16 at halftime after hitting only 24.1 percent (7-of-29) of its shots. The Cobbers entered the game as the sixth seed in the playoff tournament and only shot 36.4 percent (23-of-59) from the field for the game.
SJU (20-5 overall) was led by senior Troy Bigalke, who scored all 20 of its points in the second half and made all 12 of his free throw attempts. Sophomore Kevin Buth added 11 points for the Johnnies. The Johnnies had 10 turnovers in the first half, but only committed four in the second half when they out scored the Cobbers 52-36.
Concordia (15-11 overall) was led by senior Joe Snowden with 16 points and junior Jeff Ubben with 14 points. Senior Kermit Cooper had nine points and 17 rebounds. The Cobbers committed 21 turnovers in the loss.
The Johnnies have now won 14 straight games and will advance to the MIAC championship game on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Central Time, when they host second seeded Gustavus Adolphus on the SJU campus.
