COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s took advantage of 20 offensive rebounds to defeat Macalester 89-79 Wednesday night at Sexton Arena in Collegeville. SJU outrebounded the Scots 46-31 in the game, including a 20-6 advantage on the offensive glass. The Johnnies held a 23-5 advantage on second-chance points.
Freshman wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) led the Johnnies with 24 points, 19 of which came in the first half, and 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Senior wing Ryan Lieser (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) tallied 18 points and senior wing Brady Brink (Waconia, Minn.) added 17, all of which came in a second half where the Johnnies let a 12-point lead slip away.
Senior guard Abe Woldeslassie led Macalester (5-6, 3-3 MIAC) with 34 points and five assists. Senior center Tom Conboy added 25 points and grabbed 19 of his team’s 31 rebounds.
The Scots shot 51.6% from the floor to the Johnnies’ 40.8% but were just 9 of 26 from three-point range. SJU was 24 of 28 from the free-throw line in the game.
Saint John’s (7-5, 4-3 MIAC) plays host to Augsburg on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
Notes: SJU has now won 18 of the last 19 meetings against the Scots in Collegeville…dating back to the 2005-06 season, the Johnnies are 36-6 when they score 70 points or more.
