Saint John’s University freshman Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) earned the 2010 Phil Mickelson Award, presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation, as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf on May 14. He was also named to the Division III PING All-America second team.
The 2010 MIAC and Central Region Freshman of the Year, Giorgi (george-ee) posted a three-under par 69, thanks to six birdies, to lead SJU in the final round of the NCAA Division III Championship. He tied for 13th overall with a 294 (+7). His best finish was tying for medalist honors at Gustavus’ Twin Cities Classic in the Johnnies’ final tournament of the fall. He was runner-up at the SJU Spring Invitational and carded top-five finishes at the MIAC Men’s Championship (t-third), Gustavus Invitational (fourth) and the Wis.-Eau Claire Invitational (t-third). Giorgi also finished in the top 10 in two other events and only finished out of the top 10 twice all season.
